Place: In the center of Kemang, South Jakarta, facing McDonald Kemang
Portion: It's just fit! Not too much or less.
Tips: Make sure you plan where you want to park your car before coming. Publo provides valet service if you feel lazy to park your own car.
This new restaurant and pub opened just 2-3 months ago in the center of Kemang area, South Jakarta. You cannot miss this place as it right opposite McDonald's Kemang. I always pass it every time I go to visit my store, SPARKLING SOCIETY which is located in the same road. However, every time I thought to stop by, the parking area in front of it was so crowded. So I always skipped it, even though I knew that they provide a dedicated parking space in front of JakPetz for valet service. 1 week ago, however, we simply parked our car at McDonald's and walked across the street to try this place.
The ambiance looked quite cozy yet romantic with the effect of dim light. We ordered Mojitos to refresh our day. The mixing was just right. The sweetness blended perfectly with the taste of the lime, mint leaves, soda and white rum in a nice presentation. What a good beginning. The Mojito alone was quite pricey (IDR 120,000++/USD 12++), however they offered a buy 1 get 1 free promotion for cocktail. So I think it's good value for 2 glass of Mojitos.
A bit of a hiccup happened when I saw a small creature crawling very fast on the side of my table. I guess it was a cockroach. My husband also saw it. We reported it to the waiter, and he immediately apologized and offered us to move to the bar area. Dion, the bartender again apologized for the incident. As compliments he served us 2 bottles of Aqua in a premium package. Not only that, Dion also prepared his "signature" cocktail for us that is not included in the menu. He said that he created it only for special guests, not for sale. Double WOW!!
Food was nice but not too extraordinary. You can find similar food with great taste and at more affordable prices in Jakarta. But if in the future I want to visit this place again it's all because of the cocktails and the great service!
Complimentary Affogato Frangellico, Dion's creation only for "Special Guests" It's a mix of vanilla ice cream, coffee and a bit of liquor plus chocolate sprinkle on top. Delicious!! Thank you Dion!
The Tom Yam (IDR 42,000++/USD 4.2++) tasted quite nice however I think they adjust the taste a bit to meet the taste of locals. So it did not taste like authentic Tom Yam that you can eat in Thailand. However, the shrimp was huge!
Mongolian Beef (IDR 95,000/USD 9.5++) the beef was tender but very chewy despite its great taste. The fried rice was yummy and the kimchi did not taste that garlicky.

Place: In the NEW LIPPO MALL, Kemang Village, Jakarta
Portion: Just right
Service: Good. All complaints and requests handled well.
Tips: No newspapers available. Don't forget to bring your own. If you're a non-smoker, try to sit toward the entrance area since in the middle area you can still smell strong cigarette smell from the smoking area in the back.
Another new cafe or restaurant cafe opened in the Kemang area, South Jakarta. Cafe Barbera has been one of the first tenants in LIPPO MALL, Kemang Village. In the beginning, I wasn't even curious to try it, since I found the concept was regular, nothing special and quite similar to many other restaurant cafes in Jakarta. Until one day, me and my husband decided to visit this place because it said "since 1870". WOW, that's so traditional, no?
Now, after several visits I feel obliged to write this review. Cafe Barbera offers a variety of food, from Italian to Asian, a great selection of desserts and coffee. As Indonesian, my favorite so far is Lamb Fried Rice. For a restaurant cafe style, this place can cook a good lamb fried rice a la street vendors. And the grilled lamb is so fatty, sweet and juicy. Sometimes I wish I could have a bigger portion of the lamb :p
For the western food, they really know how to serve pasta and salad. The vegetables are very fresh and coming with a good dressing. They offer good value meal sets: a choice of pasta, hot coffee or tea and soup/salad - however they don't inform that the soup/salad coming with the set are actually very mini) for only IDR 120,000++/USD 12++. Try this one. It's a good chance for you to try the appetizer, main course and coffee/tea. If you come for a meeting or coffee time, they also offer sets of 1 selection of dessert and a cup of coffee or tea for IDR 69,000++/USD 6.9++. Choosing the dessert is always creates a dilemma for me. But I always end up with Chocolate Fondant! This is the best dessert in here. With its milky taste the chocolate melts perfectly in my mouth!
The salad ingredients always fresh. Great way to start your meal.
Fetucine Scallop and Prawn (IDR 95,000++/USD 9.5++) with 2 pieces of scallop and prawn. Take a set with coffee and soup (pumpkin or mushroom) for IDR 120,000++/USD 12++ for better value offer.
Now become my favorite dish, Lamb Fried Rice. The grilled lamb is juicy but not big enough for me :( I want some more please..
Cafe Barbera also use their own coffee. They know how to appreciate a cup of coffee, it tastes and blends perfectly with/without milk. Order Cappuccino Italiano or Cappuccino Napolitana. What's the different? Cappuccino Italiano is a blend of coffee and milk with milk foam on top whilst Cappuccino Napoletano comes in a layer of milk foam on top of coffee. Taste? No different :)
I prefer Cappuccino Italiano than Cappuccino Napoletano because I can enjoy it as the perfect mixture of milk and coffee.
MUST TRY Chocolate Fondant. The chocolate melting on the plate. Yummy!!
Cafe Barbera is quite consistent on their food quality and service. It fits for family lunch/dinner, meeting place or simply a place for a cup of coffee and delicious dessert. Don't miss this place if you come to LIPPO MALL, Kemang Village.
Place: On the right side before the entrance of Hero Kemang
Tips: The place is very small, only fit for 3 persons for dining in. So definitely not for hang out or meeting with your friends. It also doesn't have parking space, the nearest save parking space is in the area of Hero Kemang. Closed on Monday.
As the wife of an expatriate who lives in Jakarta. I know how difficult it is to find a nice bread for my husband. Unfortunately, the definition of "NICE Bread" for Europeans is totally different from Asian people. They are looking more to brown and hard bread compare to the soft white bread that we can find easily in supermarkets and bakeries. In the beginning, we bought our bread in Dharmawangsa Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel and Borobudur Hotel. But after several years, the quality and the taste were not the same anymore. So we stopped buying from those hotels and started to look for other place.
And now the search for nice bread is finished. Because we found a small place in the corner of the street near Hero Kemang, a new French Bakery. The owner, Sophie, bakes croissants and bread by herself to keep the authenticity of the taste. Honestly, I am not exaggerating about the taste of the croissants: they're HEAVENLY! The best croissants I have ever eaten in Indonesia! Crispy, buttery and the softness is just perfect! They use Swiss chocolate, so the chocolate doesn't taste like cheap chocolate compound. When you bite the croissant, it will make "crunch" sound. Gosh! Why they have only just opened now?
My favorite chocolate croissant and my husband's favorite almond croissant (IDR 20,000/USD 2)
By now, I know Sophie and her Indonesian husband. And she knows that I always order chocolate croissant and almond croissant. So, more or less I feel like home in there :) Sophie also likes to talk in French if she knows that the customers can speak in French. Love to hear their accent. I feel like I am in Paris! However, her Bahasa is also perfect. So not to worry about the language, and she can speak English, too.
Still water will be served every time you eat in and the nice Cappuccino is based on Nespresso Coffee. Don't forget to buy the fresh baguette, they are really crispy outside and soft inside!
Place: Easy to find in the center of Kemang, South Jakarta, Indonesia.
Portion: Fit for normal human :)
Price: Still acceptable for this kind of restaurant. Food start from IDR 50K - 200K (USD 5 - 20)
Tips: It's new and it's hype.. so you need to book ahead for dinner and during the weekend.
This is my 3rd time seeking out this new food venue in the Kemang area. Until 3 weeks ago, I didn't even notice that there's a new restaurant near my place. I just passed by and I saw so many luxury cars parked in front of it. From the outside, the look is quite modern. With the front made up of huge glass windows, you can clearly see inside the restaurant. The combination of wooden decoration and spot lights gives you more than a calm feeling inside.
On the 1st visit, I suggested to my friends to try this restaurant for dinner. The ambiance is really nice. At first I was quite happy to have this "Loewy" look-like restaurant really close to my place. Next surprising thing, apparently all tables inside were FULL!! So we were offered to sit in the garden area. On the way to our table we passed the bar and most of the bottles are still full, showing that the place is really new. The garden area is quite romantic, with the hanging pots being the main decoration. With a lit candle on every table, it makes a perfect place for couples to have dinner.
So far the place is quite good. How about the main idea.. FOOD & DRINKS? The menu is quite varied. From pasta to Asian food, cakes to coffee. Since I was super hungry, I ordered grilled chicken, one of the house specialties. Well, it's not that bad.. but not perfect either. The chicken was dry and the light in the garden area is not bright enough to give more appetite appeal to my eyes. I tasted my friend's food, Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) ... tasteless. Despite my friend's efforts to mix some chili into it, I believe it still tasted flat for Indonesian palate. So I tried to forget the taste by ordering coffee mocha. Surprisingly, I can claim that it's so delicious! The milk, coffee and chocolate combination was melting on my mouth and in less than 10 minutes my cup was empty :)
2nd visit was in the afternoon, coffee time also with my husband and friends. I ordered again the coffee mocha, this time it was not as good as before. It was simply too sweet. I tasted my husband's spaghetti and they were quite OK. The nice thing, this time we managed to sit in one of the 4 tables in the non-smoking area located in the front part of the restaurant. I was wondering at that time why nowadays many restaurants designate only small sections as non-smoking areas? Is it the time for non-smokers to give more of their way of life to Smokers? If you are a non-smoker, what are your choices if you come to the restaurant and they say that all of the (small) non-smoking area is occupied? Either you desperately want to eat in the restaurant and you are OK with smoking section, or you leave it. How about providing 50:50 so we can live happily ever after.
3rd visit, this time I tried my luck by ordering Thai green curry with chicken. I was really hoping this time I made the right choice. But again, I was wrong. The rice was very dry and hard. The coconut milk was just too much, I hardly could taste the green curry. The chicken tenderness was quite OK, but sometimes I could taste raw chicken skin when I chewed it. Another surprise element: my husband's linguini pesto came with cream sauce. So it didn't as per his expectation. Overall food presentation was quite nice, however I need more than only visual probes. Don't you think so?
So, if you are a really food lover, this place will not give you the desired mouth watering satisfaction. But they can deliver as a hang out place with your family and friends. For food try to order pasta and avoid anything Asian, especially with rice or your tongue will get mad at you!
